Classes
Class 1
Class 1 is a mixed-age class comprising Nursery and Reception pupils and the teacher is Sarah Clement while Rachel Thomas is on maternity leave. Claire McKenzie is our Nursery Leader and further assistance is in place from Grace Round. Throughout the day, the children are encouraged to work independently. Every child is also given regular opportunities to work with an adult in whole-class and small group situations. The children are given opportunities to play and explore, to investigate and experience things and to ‘have a go’, both within our beautiful Victorian classroom and the purpose-built outdoor area outside. They are active and develop their own ideas. They are all unique and will have different interests and abilities.
When your child starts school they will engage in lots of fun activities that are planned and designed to enhance their early literacy skills.
They will…
- access fine motor activities such as, threading, manipulating play dough and building with intricate parts to build strength in their hands
- engage in lots of different mark making using different media, such as, chalks, paints and water
- access Twinkl phonics lessons
- listen to and share stories
- develop their communication skills acting and taking on a role in the role play and small world areas
- an enabling mathematical environment which encourages independent exploration of concepts with daily focused inputs
We base our teaching around a theme that the children have demonstrated interest in, and ensure that it has meaning to their lives.
The children are supported by their Year 6 buddies who look after Reception on the playground, share fantastic stories with them and keep them safe. These friendships will develop over the school year and will remain fond memories as they progress through their primary school life and beyond!
Class 2
Class 2 is made up of Year 1 and Year 2 pupils taught by Richard Degg and assisted by Tina Ball.
Step into one of our lessons and you will see lots of talk, questioning, debate and knowledge being used. All our pupils are unique and have many different skills to offer. We use a knowledge-based curriculum planned around a quality key text, you can go to the link to our knowledge organizers and termly plans for further information.
We offer a rich and broad curriculum by making links across subjects where possible. and through Grid Learning, we aim to explore the work of lots of different artists, designers and architects to fulfil the requirements of the Art and Design Technology Curriculum.
We use iPads and the floor robots to develop basic IT and programming skills.
We utilise books from a variety of schemes to consolidate our reading at home and we utilise IT programmes such as Mathletics and Twinkl to set weekly homework challenges.
Within Class 2 the children are given lots of opportunities to be independent as we believe that this is a key life skill that enables them to become more active learners as they progress through the rest of the school.
Class 3
In Class 3 we have Year 3 and Year 4 pupils taught by Caroline Perkins and Nicola Chambers and supported by Alex Loveitt and Julia Joliffe.
By Key Stage 2 we have taught the pupils to develop and use greater independence in the choices they make within their own learning.
As with Key Stage 1, each term is linked to a specific topic and these topics are both knowledge and skills-based. The children are encouraged to combine the skills and knowledge to produce work of greater depth.
The children experience a full and broad Curriculum, where possible we use our termly topics to inspire our art and design technology work. The children enjoy being challenged to apply their learning in Maths to problem solve and use experiments to extend their understanding of the world around them in science.
The children also have an allocated Chromebook which allows us to utilise Google Classroom as a tool to enrich the children’s learning experiences.
Within some subjects, Specialist Teachers are employed to give the children the opportunity to further develop their skills.
Class 4
In Class 4 we have Year 5 and Year 6 pupils taught by Alison Steer and Nicola Chambers and supported by Abby Ratcliffe.
As the oldest children in the school, it is now time to expand their world view, using high quality texts to bring all learning experiences to life by walking in the shoes of others around the world and from significant periods of history.
Across Key Stage 2, children experience a full and broad Curriculum, where possible we use our termly topics to inspire our art and design technology work. The children enjoy being challenged to apply their learning in Maths to problem solve and use experiments to extend their understanding of the world around them in science.
The children also have an allocated Chromebook which is used as a tool to enrich the children’s learning experiences.
Class 4 is also a time to take on greater responsibility in the life of our school, both as ‘Buddies’ to the Reception children and in assuming other responsibilities such as helping run assemblies and charity activities where we think about the wider community.
For Year 6 pupils, it is a particularly significant year and we encourage them to maximise learning opportunities, both in and out-of-school. This includes a thorough transition for Secondary School. We believe it is important to develop leadership skills that contribute to the well-being of everybody in our school and to prepare them for their next step in their education.
