Mathematics

Our aim is for the children to develop a love for numbers, being able to have the confidence to apply their mathematical knowledge to new situations and having a good recall of useful number facts.

Maths Co-ordinator Mrs Ali Steer

‘Maths is my passion, having a joint honours degree in maths and physics, and having led maths in several schools, I am passionate about passing in my love of the subject to the pupils at Hampton Lucy C of E Primary school’

How we teach maths

At Hampton Lucy C of E Primary School, we have a daily maths lesson, using White Rose Maths scheme as  our starting point. We enrich and support our learning with a variety of other sources. We ensure that children deepen their learning of each step by carefully questioning and by setting challenging problems.

Initially, we ‘Do it!’ where the children apply their learning in a way similar to what they are shown in the introduction.

Next we ‘Twist it’ where they apply their learning in a different way.

And finally, ‘Bop it’, where we apply our learning to a tricky problem or puzzle.

In addition to our daily maths lessons, starting in 2025/2026, we are participating in the Origin Maths, Mastery for Number program in reception and key stage 1. This program aims to give children strong foundations in mathematics and instant recall of number facts.

We continue with our strong emphasis on the mastery number facts and instant recall by using Times Tables Rock Stars in key stage 2 We also set weekly homework from year 1 onwards using the ‘mathletics’ online learning platform. We encourage children to practise their skills earning certificates as they go.
