Spiritual, Moral, Social & Cultural
Everything we do at Hampton Lucy C of E Primary School is underpinned by love. Our love for one another, learning and the world. Our Restorative approach to behaviour management develops the children’s understanding of how our actions affect others. Our curriculum is designed to instil a love of learning in our children, recognising how they are inspired by others and in turn how their efforts can be inspirational.
For more information please see our Behaviour, Spirituality and Collective Worship policies.
Where will you see SMSC in our Curriculum?
Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural themes run throughout the curriculum and learning. For example:
In English we develop the children’s spiritual understanding by engaging with fiction, poetry and drama, allowing them to explore the feelings and attitudes in a wide range of genres. Moral development happens as the children discuss issues raised by the stories they study, which also allows Social and Cultural development as the children visit the lives of a diverse group of people from different times and places.
In Maths and Science, we look with awe and wonder at how the world is made and ask big questions. We learn about mathematicians and scientists from around the world and the impact their work has had on us today.
In History and Geography, we learn about how the world and the people in it have changed and discuss the impact of these changes.. Children may explore what it would be like to live in a squatter settlement, or as a victim of an earthquake or other natural disaster and are encouraged to explore their own feelings about the people, culture, place and environments that they are learning about. In history, artefacts are used to give children a sense of the past and children are encouraged to explore the role played by important individuals, for good or ill, in the shaping of the world we live in.
In French, our children develop a sense of fascination and curiosity for another language, the people and its culture.
In Music, we sing songs from all over the world, appreciate world famous composers and musicians and reflect upon different musical genres. We use our creativity and imagination when playing instruments and composing music.
In Art and Design Technology, we look at the work of great artists and develop a sense of awe and wonder. The children appreciate the talents and achievements of others. They develop a sense of inner peace that creating art can instil.
Often moments of awe and wonder can happen without planning, and teachers will take time to stop and reflect with their students when moments of inspiration happen.
We do, however, plan our SMSC work and some of the specific ‘moments’ that we plan for are outlined below.
