Mathematics
Our aim is for the children to develop a love for numbers, being able to have the confidence to apply their mathematical knowledge to new situations and having a good recall of useful number facts.

How we teach maths
At Hampton Lucy C of E Primary School, we have a daily maths lesson, using White Rose Maths scheme as our starting point. We enrich and support our learning with a variety of other sources. We ensure that children deepen their learning of each step by carefully questioning and by setting challenging problems.
Initially, we ‘Do it!’ where the children apply their learning in a way similar to what they are shown in the introduction.
Next we ‘Twist it’ where they apply their learning in a different way.
And finally, ‘Bop it’, where we apply our learning to a tricky problem or puzzle.
In addition to our daily maths lessons, we also want to be ‘Marvellous at Maths’. Here we use weekly activities to ensure the children have a good recall of useful number facts (number bonds, times tables, etc). The children enjoy practising their skills and being rewarded with badges.
We also set weekly homework from year 1 onwards using the ‘mathletics’ online learning platform. We encourage children to practise their skills earning certificates as they go.
